Another barrier broken!👩🏽‍💼 Mary Peltola won the special election for Alaska’s only US House seat. She’s the first Native Alaskan to serve in the House, and the first woman to hold the seat. She’s also not a regular mom politician, she’s a cool mom politician. Mary won the election by highlighting that she’s here for Alaskans. “I’m not a millionaire. I’m not an international celebrity.”

Science

Seeing double👯‍♀️ A recent study has found that people who look identical have similar genomes (DNA sequences). Lead researcher, Dr. Manel Esteller, was a little surprised by this finding. But also noted that there are only so many ways to build a unique face. “Now there are so many people in the world, the system is repeating itself.” You never know when you might have your own Sister, Sister moment, doppelgänger edition.

• Restrain your cultural ignorance for the 1800s 👏🏾 Oriini Kaipara shut down a viewer who kept complaining about her moko kauae (a traditional Māori tattoo that covers a woman’s lips and chin), and her use of Māori language when delivering the news.

• There’s a new Barbie in town 👩🏾 Madame CJ Walker is the latest addition to the Barbie Inspiring Women series. ICYMI, she was one of the first Black, female, self-made millionaires.

• Megan Thee … She Hulk? 💪🏾 Megan Thee Stallion is joining the MCU with a cameo appearance in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law series on Disney+.

So this is a bit different to our usual weekly interview with a trailblazing BIPOC woman founder or community leader…

Here’s the thing. We’ve had a bunch of new subscribers join our community recently (hi, friends! 👋🏽) And most of you have probably missed out reading about on some of the incredible women we’ve previously featured.
